Belagavi: Hindalco Industries Ltd, the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, has commissioned India’s first greenfield manufacturing facility for superfine precipitated aluminium trihydrate (PPT ATH) in Belagavi. The facility is expected to strengthen the company’s specialty materials portfolio and reduce India’s dependence on imports for critical fire-safety applications.With an annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes, the plant is a key addition to Hindalco’s specialty alumina business. The company said the facility supports the Centre’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by enabling domestic production of an advanced flame-retardant material.Superfine PPT ATH is a halogen-free flame retardant used in cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation products, composites and industrial coatings. It helps suppress flame propagation and reduce smoke generation while avoiding the release of toxic halogen-acid gases during combustion.Hindalco said the plant’s phase-I capacity can meet nearly the entire domestic demand from the wire and cable industry. The facility has been designed for phased expansion to 60,000 tonnes a year to cater to future market growth.“The commissioning of our Superfine Precipitated Hydrate plant in Belagavi will further strengthen our leadership position and enhance our high-value specialty alumina portfolio in India,” said Satish Pai, managing director, Hindalco Industries.Saurabh Khedekar, CEO, alumina business, said the company’s InnoSafe solution would support safer and more sustainable infrastructure by improving fire resistance and smoke suppression.Hindalco’s specialty alumina business has a production capacity of around 800,000 tonnes a year and offers more than 120 grades of specialty alumina and alumina hydrates. The addition of superfine PPT ATH expands its presence in advanced flame-retardant applications.Developed through Hindalco’s in-house research and innovation ecosystem, the Belagavi facility features automated manufacturing controls and integrated quality systems. The company said the plant is powered entirely by renewable energy sources, including biomass, solar and wind.Hindalco also said its refinery has achieved a greenhouse-gas intensity of 0.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per tonne of alumina.The facility is expected to strengthen India’s manufacturing capabilities in fire-safe electrical, infrastructure and mobility applications while expanding the domestic availability of advanced specialty materials.Get the latest Business News and Live updates.
