On August 24, Talen Energy Corporation (NASDAQ: TLN ) was initiated by Mizuho with an 'Outperform' rating and a price target of $405, implying an upside of over 32% from the current levels. The positive outlook by Mizuho's Anthony Crowdell reflects the utility's growing presence in the tightening PJM power markets.
Talen has approximately 98% of its generation located in PJM, the largest regional transmission organization in the United States. This positions it well to capitalize on the widening supply/demand gap that drove the latest capacity auction from $29/MW-day in 2024 and 2025 to the current $330/MW-day cap. As a result, Mr Crowdell expects the company's adjusted free cash flow yield to reach 14% in 2028.
The analyst also highlighted Talen Energy's Susquehanna nuclear facility, giving it access to reliable, carbon-free baseload power. The utility signed an expanded nuclear energy partnership with Amazon to supply up to 1,920 MW of electricity from this facility last year. Moreover, the company completed the acquisition of Cornerstone this summer, which increases its generation capacity by approximately 2.6 GW through three plants in PJM.
Why Talen Could Be AI's Biggest Power Winners:
Talen Energy's exposure to the rising power demand is structural rather than cyclical, since PJM caters to a massive and rapidly growing number of data centers, particularly in Northern Virginia, Ohio, and Illinois. It can take billions of dollars and years of time to develop new generation and transmission infrastructure to cater to this soaring demand, providing a significant competitive edge to companies that already have a solid presence.
Regulatory developments could also mark an important tailwind for Talen. FERC has recently ordered the country's electric grid operators to reconsider how they connect very large energy users, such as data centers, with the aim of accelerating connections and improving grid reliability. If these reforms make it easier for data centers to secure power, Talen could be in a strong position to capitalize on its existing power generation capacity.
Talen's recent acquisition of Cornerstone also adds to its appeal, as it helped the utility diversify its generation portfolio and enabled it to raise its 2026 guidance and also increase its adjusted free cash flow per share outlook for 2027 and 2028.
Regulatory Hurdles and an AI Slowdown Could Derail Talen:
Regulatory developments could also mark a major risk for Talen Energy. This was evident when federal regulators blocked the utility from supplying power from its Susquehanna power plant to an adjacent AWS data center facility, due to concerns over grid reliability and a potential inflation of electricity bills for the public.
