Shares of biotechnology company United Therapeutics (NASDAQ:UTHR) jumped 13.6% in the afternoon session after a federal district court ruled that competitor Liquidia Corporation infringed patent claims covering United Therapeutics' inhaled treprostinil treatments.
Liquidia Corporation announced in a company press release that the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware found claims 1 and 14 of U.S. Patent No. 11,826,327 to be valid and infringed by Liquidia's Yutrepia inhalation powder. The court invalidated the other asserted patent claims and ordered both companies (Liquidia and United Therapeutics) to submit proposed legal remedies within one week.

United Therapeutics's shares are not very volatile and have only had 5 moves greater than 5% over the last year. Moves this big are rare for United Therapeutics and indicate this news significantly impacted the market's perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was 6 days ago when the stock dropped 4% on the news that Goldman Sachs initiated coverage of the stock with a Sell rating. Goldman Sachs analyst Andrea Newkirk began covering the biotechnology company with the negative rating. A Sell rating signals that the analyst expects the stock to perform worse than the broader market or its peers, which can prompt some investors to reduce their positions. New coverage from a major investment bank often draws attention because it adds a fresh view on the company's valuation and outlook.
United Therapeutics is up 9.5% since the beginning of the year, and at $543.86 per share, it is trading close to its 52-week high of $596.76 from May 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of United Therapeutics's shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,947.
