NEW DELHI: Public sector Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has signed an agreement with the Delhi division of Northern Railway for the supply of PNG to 22 railway establishments in Delhi-NCR, as part of its efforts to replace diesel and LPG with natural gas.IGL said piped natural gas will be used for boiler operations at mechanised laundries at Delhi Sarai Rohilla, Old Delhi, Anand Vihar Terminal, Hazrat Nizamuddin and New Delhi railway stations, besides officers’ rest houses, base kitchens, running rooms, subordinate rest houses, and guard and TTE lobbies in Delhi, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar. The initiative is part of govt’s efforts to expand the use of piped gas under PNG Drive 3.0, which was launched on Oct 1 to increase domestic and commercial PNG connections.IGL said initial PNG consumption under the agreement is estimated at nearly 3,000 standard cubic metres per day (SCMD), replacing daily consumption of about 500 kg of LPG and 2,500 litres of diesel.“By facilitating the transition from LPG and diesel to PNG, the partnership is expected to simplify fuel handling, strengthen supply reliability and reduce dependence on conventional liquid fuels,” IGL said in a statement, adding that the initiative will help expand the natural gas ecosystem and support India’s transition towards a “cleaner, convenient, cost effective, continuous, secure, and sustainable energy future”.IGL chairman Subhankar Sen said the agreement will facilitate the replacement of a substantial quantity of LPG with natural gas, thereby helping reduce import dependence and the subsidy burden.Pushpesh Raman Tripathi, DRM, Delhi Division, Northern Railway, said plans were afoot to extend PNG connectivity to railway hospitals and residential colonies in the future. You use AI every day.
