India’s GitHub developer base hits 32 million, adds 10 million in a year
India’s GitHub community rose to 32 million after adding 10 million developers in a year, ranking second globally behind the US, says Octoverse 2026.
Bengaluru: India added 10 million developers to GitHub in the past year, taking its developer community to 32 million, the second-largest globally after the US, according to GitHub’s Octoverse 2026 report. The US remains the largest developer community, with 38.3 million developers, after adding 10.3 million over the year. Together, India and the US account for roughly 31% of GitHub’s more than 225 million developers worldwide.China ranks third with 12.4 million developers, followed by Brazil with 10.2 million, Japan with 7.15 million, the UK with 6.4 million, Indonesia with 6.3 million and Germany with 6.3 million.Brazil added 3.2 million developers during the year, the third-highest increase among countries, while Japan added 2.6 million and Indonesia 1.97 million.Developer numbers and coding activity, however, tell slightly different stories. Based on adjusted pushes to public repositories, the US leads, followed by India, China and Brazil. Germany, the UK, South Korea, France and Japan also feature among the leading countries by this measure. South Korea ranks seventh in coding activity despite not featuring in the top 10 by developer count.GitHub’s latest report also tracks progress against projections it made last year for developer communities in 2030. A year into the projections, every country has covered at least a fifth of the distance towards its target. The US has covered 38.6% of the gap to its projected 54.7 million developers by 2030, while India has covered 28.3% of the distance to its target of 57.5 million. India is still projected to overtake the US by 2030, although the US added slightly more developers in the latest year. Some smaller markets are progressing faster relative to their targets. Morocco has covered 54.4% of the distance to its 2030 projection, followed by Indonesia at 45.4%, Nigeria at 37%, Japan at 36.8% and Germany at 35.2%.China has covered 24.2% of its projected growth, South Africa 23.3% and Kenya 21.7%.The factors driving developer growth vary across regions. In the Americas, fintech and digital payments are important drivers, particularly in Brazil. Europe, the Middle East and Africa are seeing growth linked to AI adoption in manufacturing, startups and expanding developer communities across Africa. In Asia-Pacific, govt investment in AI infrastructure and talent is a common factor.Projecting future growth is becoming more difficult, GitHub said. Of 43 models it ran to estimate developer growth through 2031, 21 projected that developer numbers would more than triple, while 19 projected growth of between two and three times. Only three models projected less than a doubling. You use AI every day. Now get your AI Quotient. Take the AIQ test.
