OpenAI debuts Dots AI agents in challenge to Meta's popular Muse agent

OpenAI ( OPAI.PVT ) CEO Sam Altman launched the company's newest product during its OpenAI DevDay on Tuesday: Dots. A high-powered AI agent, Dots is designed to perform tasks for you over long periods via connections to 4,000 apps via ChatGPT.

For instance, you can tell your Dot to keep you updated on projects you're working on, add items to your schedule, and more.

Powered by OpenAI's Astra model, the company says Dots can do things like recognize when an alert about a software bug comes in via Slack and begin digging into it. In another example, OpenAI says an early tester's Dot saw that they didn't submit an invoice for a publication. The Dot then set up the invoice and submitted it after getting the tester's approval.

You'll also be able to hand off tasks in Slack to your Dot, helping to cut down on the ever-growing number of pings and distractions you receive each day.

According to OpenAI, users will start with a single Dot, name it and customize it for themselves. The company says that in the future, it imagines users having whole teams of Dots working together for them.

Dots will roll out to Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise users in available markets.

OpenAI's Dots comes weeks after Meta ( META ) debuted its popular Muse AI agent . Muse quickly shot to the top of both Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store, becoming a major win for the company, as it continues to spend billions on its AI buildout.

Unlike Meta, which is marketing Muse toward the consumer market, OpenAI is angling for the enterprise space.

I've spent significant time using Meta's Muse and have found that, while it makes mistakes at times, it's generally a solid AI agent for the average person, especially for tasks like comparing products and getting quick answers to complex questions.

Dots come as OpenAI and rivals Anthropic ( ANTH.PVT ), Meta, and Google ( GOOG , GOOGL ) have revealed that their various AI agents have gone rogue, hacking into various organizations and governments over the last year.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called on AI labs to slow the development of frontier models. Something Altman said he agreed with.

In addition to launching Dots, OpenAI unveiled its latest model, GPT-6.1 Sol.

According to the company, 6.1 Sol is nearly as powerful as its top-of-the-line Astra model for coding, computer use, and professional work, at a significantly lower price.

Pricing has become increasingly important for AI labs as customers seek ways to reduce their AI usage across their businesses.
