Pixxel raises $100 mn to expand satellite fleet, build planetary intelligence biz

Bengaluru: Space-tech startup Pixxel has raised $100 million, the largest private funding round in India’s space sector, making it the country’s highest-funded space startup so far. Its Hyderabad-based peer Skyroot Aerospace has raised around $160 million, achieving unicorn status at a $1.1 billion valuation earlier this year.The round, co-led by Temasek and Seraphim, takes Pixxel’s total funding to $195 million. New investors 360 ONE Asset and IMM Investment participated alongside existing backers, including Radical Ventures and growX ventures. Sources told TOI that the fundraise values the company anywhere between $400 million and $500 million.The company plans to use the fresh capital to move beyond hyperspectral imaging and build a broader planetary infrastructure business combining satellites, Earth observation data and AI-led intelligence. The capital will help Pixxel expand its satellite portfolio — including its Firefly hyperspectral constellation, upcoming Honeybee satellites and sub-metre high-resolution satellites — while scaling manufacturing and its Earth intelligence platform Aurora.Pixxel currently operates six Firefly satellites, which provide hyperspectral imagery at 5-metre resolution. Honeybee, the next-generation satellite, will retain the resolution while extending the wavelength range into short-wave infrared (SWIR). Fireflies can support applications ranging from early crop-disease and water-stress detection to deforestation and ocean-pollution monitoring.“The first is to launch more satellites. In addition to the six Fireflies we launched last year, more Fireflies will go up, and then Honeybees will start going up,” Pixxel co-founder and CEO Awais Ahmed said. “Honeybees are upgraded versions of Fireflies. They will retain the 5-metre hyperspectral resolution, which is the best in the world, but will have a much wider wavelength range extending into short-wave infrared.”The company is also building sub-metre high-resolution satellites under its public-private partnership with IN-SPACe to develop India’s first public-private Earth observation constellation of 12 satellites.Pixxel is also expanding from satellite operator to manufacturer. It is building a 200-kg modular satellite platform for the Indian Air Force and is looking to provide sovereign satellite infrastructure to customers in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the US.“The fact that we could build our own satellites means that we could also then build it for others,” Ahmed said. Its manufacturing expansion will be led by Gigapixel, its next-generation facility. The existing Megapixel facility can build 25 satellites in parallel, or about 100 a year. Gigapixel is designed to handle 100 satellites in parallel, translating to peak capacity of about 400 satellites annually.But Pixxel’s larger ambition goes beyond satellites. “We started as a hyperspectral imaging company. I think we are now the planetary infrastructure company,” Ahmed said. “We will build the hardware that goes into orbit — the foundational infrastructure needed to sense and understand our planet.”At the centre of this strategy is Aurora, Pixxel’s Earth intelligence platform. The company is developing AI models and geospatial foundation models that can interpret satellite imagery for applications including agriculture, oil and gas, and mining.Pixxel has secured contracts with NASA and the National Reconnaissance Office, won multiple iDEX challenges from the Ministry of Defence and unveiled plans for an orbital data-centre demonstration satellite. The company has over 300 employees and expects to reach around 400 within the next year as revenues and its customer base grow.Sovereignty has become a major theme, spanning sovereign cloud and AI to space. When asked how growing demand will change the game for Pixxel, Ahmed said, “I see it as an addition rather than a change to our core business. But this wave of sovereignization has made countries realise they need their own assets.
