Amazon customers who failed to receive refunds or were incorrectly charged for returned merchandise may be eligible for payments under a $309.5 million class-action settlement.

While some Amazon ( AMZN ) settlement payments were issued automatically, others have until Dec. 1, 2026, to file a claim.

The fund is part of a broader settlement that topped $1 billion. That total includes roughly $600 million in refunds that Amazon has already issued. The final approval hearing is scheduled for March.

What the Amazon returns settlement is about

The settlement stems from a 2023 class action lawsuit that alleged Amazon failed to properly process refunds for returned products for nearly nine years.

While "Amazon promises customers 'free, no hassle returns,' it routinely … fails to issue refunds or re-charges customers who have returned items in compliance with Amazon's refund and exchange policies because of defects in Amazon's return and refund processes, often incorrectly claiming that the return had not been received by Amazon," the lawsuit claims.

Plaintiffs also alleged that Amazon believed "customers did not notice" the return failures, some of which resulted from "human error."

Amazon denied any wrongdoing, and as part of the settlement, changed some of its return and refund operations for up to two years. Among the changes, the online retailer agreed to monitor return processing times and notify customers when refunds are approved or denied.

Amazon customers are eligible for the settlement payout if they initiated a return or refund for a physical product between Sept. 5, 2017, and Feb. 12, 2026, and did not receive a refund, the refund was delayed or for an incorrect amount, or they received a refund and then were later incorrectly charged again for the returned product.

A final settlement court hearing will be held on March 16, 2027.

How much are the refund settlement payments?

No average payments have been reported so far, and each payout varies based on the amount of unpaid, late, or reversed refunds.

The claim form is available on the official settlement website, ReturnSettlement.com . Claimants must provide information regarding the order related to the refund in question, including:

And the reason the refund was rejected, if known

Additional information or documentation may be required.

Submit claim forms online or postmarked by Dec. 1, 2026.
