Anthropic launches in-country Claude AI inference in India via AWS
Anthropic enables in-country Claude AI inference in India via AWS Bedrock, keeping prompts and responses on local servers to meet data residency needs.
Bengaluru: Anthropic has brought in-country inference for its Claude AI models to India through Amazon Bedrock, allowing requests sent via its India endpoint to be processed on servers located within the country. The move addresses data residency requirements of regulated sectors, allowing enterprises to keep sensitive AI workloads within India. In simple terms, when an Indian customer uses the India endpoint, the prompt sent to Claude and the model’s response are processed on servers in India. Amazon Bedrock, AWS’s unified platform for accessing and deploying generative AI models, provides the infrastructure through which customers can access Claude locally.Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5 are now available with in-country inference through Amazon Bedrock in India.India is Anthropic’s second-largest market for Claude.ai, with software development accounting for 45.2% of work-related tasks users bring to Claude in the country — the highest share of any market, said Irina Ghose, managing director at Anthropic India, in an interview with TOI.Over the past year, adoption has widened across banking and payments, large enterprises, IT services, digital companies, healthcare, science and public services.TCS is equipping 50,000 associates with Claude, while Infosys is combining it with its Topaz platform. Cognizant uses Claude in systems it builds for clients, while LTTS is embedding it in its engineering platforms.Swiggy has made some of its flagship services accessible through MCP, while Instamart allows customers to browse and buy more than 40,000 products through prompts.“Requests sent to Claude through the India endpoint are processed on servers located within India. That is what our customers in India, especially in regulated sectors, asked us for: to use Claude on their most critical work with every request processed within the country,” Ghose said.Financial institutions, govt bodies and large enterprises sought local inference because of regulatory and data-handling requirements, she added.Satinder Pal Singh, director, solution architects, AWS India and South Asia, said Amazon Bedrock gives customers control over their data. “The controls that keep processing within the country are built into the service, and the audit trails and access controls that risk and compliance teams require before they put AI into production,” he said.Ghose said local inference could allow deployments that had been waiting on the capability to move ahead. “We expect this momentum to grow rapidly,” she said.Anthropic’s Bengaluru office, which opened in Feb, is its second in Asia after Tokyo. The company plans to expand its India team and local partnerships. It is also working to improve Claude’s training data across 10 Indian languages — Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam and Urdu — through work with Karya aimed at improving performance across Indian languages, domains and cultural contexts.India also saw among the highest registrations when Anthropic launched its Claude Partner Network in March. Around 5,000 people were certified at its first Claude partner certification event in Bengaluru in Aug.You use AI every day. Now get your AI Quotient. Take the AIQ test.
