NEW DELHI: LPG demand fell by over 9% year-on-year in Sept, while petrol and diesel sales registered growth of 7% and 5%, respectively, provisional data released by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) showed.LPG consumption in Sept was recorded at 2.6 million tonnes (MT), compared to 2.9 MT during the same month a year earlier.Month-on-month consumption, however, registered a growth of 8%, up from 2.4 MT.Petrol sales increased from 3.4 MT in Sept last year to 3.6 MT, while diesel consumption rose from 6.8 MT to 7.1 MT. Petrol and diesel consumption had registered year-on-year growth of 7.9% and 6.5%, respectively, in July.While petrol is largely used as an automobile fuel and its consumption is commensurate with the increasing number of vehicles, diesel is consumed by transport vehicles for passenger and freight movement, besides being used in the agricultural sector.Erratic monsoon conditions due to El Nino boosted demand for diesel for irrigation.Cumulative petrol consumption during Apr-Sept in the current financial year increased 7% to 22.6 MT, while diesel consumption rose 4.8% to 47.9 MT.
