Mexican chain closes all remaining locations after 22 years

Sadly, the end of the Texas-based chain’s long run wasn’t due to a lack of business.

Mexican restaurants have been a fixture of American dining for decades, with their popularity helping fuel the rise of many beloved brands.

That makes restaurant closures particularly noticeable for local communities. Across the Mexican restaurant industry, several chains have closed locations in recent years, while others have exited markets or shut down entirely.

Now, another longtime Mexican restaurant chain has closed its final locations, leaving consumers in a Texas community with fewer familiar dining options after more than two decades in business.

Founded in 2004, Kikis Restaurant is known for its authentic Mexican food and family-style fajitas, with locations across Brownsville, Texas.

Kikis Restaurant closes its final locations

Kikis Restaurant has closed its last two locations in Brownsville after 22 years in operation.

"Today we have to write one of the most difficult messages in our history," Kikis Restaurant wrote in a Facebook post , which has been translated into English.

"It deeply pains us to say goodbye to something our family worked on for more than two decades. We leave with sadness, yes, but also with hearts full of gratitude and pride for everything we achieved together."

The closures leave the restaurant without a remaining location in the Brownsville market.

Why Kikis Restaurant is closing all its locations

According to the restaurant's owners, the closures were not caused by a lack of business.

In a statement to Channel 5 News , the family that owns the restaurant said it had been dealing with a "difficult" tax situation following audits by the Texas Comptroller over the past several months.

The family said it made large monthly payments while continuing to cover payroll, rent, and other operating expenses. But eventually, it fell behind on rent.

The restaurant had initially planned to close its Padre Island Highway location on Sept. 25. However, support from loyal customers allowed it to remain open through Sept. 27, according to another Kikis Facebook post .

That made the Padre Island Highway restaurant the chain's final operating location.

Mexican restaurant chains face continued closures

Kikis Restaurant's shutdown comes as other Mexican restaurant chains have also reduced their footprints or closed locations.

Mexican restaurants remain a significant part of the U.S. dining industry, spanning traditional restaurants, Tex-Mex, and fast-casual chains.

At the same time, some restaurant chains have responded to changing business conditions by closing locations, exiting markets, or restructuring their operations.
