Germany's first F-35A Lightning II marks a major milestone for Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE: LMT ), as the company presented it to the German government at Lockheed's F-35 production facility. For Lockheed Martin, this development highlights the continuing expansion of an F-35 franchise now selected by 20 nations.

In line with Germany's program of 35 F-35A aircraft, this milestone offers a potential long-term revenue pipeline for Lockheed Martin, covering training, production, and sustainment. The first eight aircraft will be delivered to Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Arkansas beginning this fall for pilot training, while the first German F-35s are expected to arrive in Germany in late 2027.

President of Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, OJ Sanchez, considers F-35 more than a fighter jet. He stated:

"It is a strategic capability that enables allies to operate together, adapt faster and stay ahead of emerging threats."

Lockheed Martin continues to scale up its operations across international markets. Very recently, the Javelin Joint Venture, Lockheed's strategic alliance with Raytheon, signed an MOU with Tata Advanced Systems Limited to explore future co-production of the Javelin All Up Round in India. The move could broaden the addressable market for Javelin, and result in enhanced supply availability for India and other regional partners.

Program timeline carries a notable risk for this program. Full operational capability isn't expected until 2029, and the first German-based jets won't arrive until late 2027. This leaves Lockheed vulnerable to potential delays from infrastructure readiness, supply chain bottlenecks, or training pipelines. Such factors could push schedules further and raise execution risks.

Geopolitical developments and defense budgets could also lead to uncertainties. The program remains dependent on Germany maintaining its defense spending and procurement commitments. Such spending could come under pressure due to shift in coalition priorities, political changes, or weakness across the broader European economic landscape. Any reduction in Germany's 35-aircraft program of record would directly impact Lockheed Martin's long-term order backlog and industrial partnership plans.

Data tracked across 1,000+ hedge funds by Insider Monkey still shows significant amount of institutional interest. This is despite a drop in the number of hedge funds holding positions in the stock during the second quarter. As per 13F filings, hedge fund ownership declined from 83 funds in Q1 2026 to 75 funds in the following quarter. Short interest of 1.17% suggests very nominal amount of active bets against the stock.
