Starting a food business? FSSAI offers help to navigate safety rules and approvals

NEW DELHI: For entrepreneurs launching food businesses, navigating food safety regulations can be as challenging as developing a product. From securing licences to getting labelling and product claims right, gaps in regulatory understanding can lead to avoidable errors and delays. To address these challenges, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will operationalise a dedicated Start-Up Cell next month officials said. The cell will help emerging food businesses understand regulatory requirements and seek guidance on compliance.According to an FSSAI social media post, start-ups can approach the cell every Wednesday during a dedicated online session to get their queries addressed. They can also email questions to startupcell@fssai.gov.in.The cell will provide guidance on food business licensing and registration, product standards and categorisation, approvals, labelling and advertising claims, testing, imports, e-commerce compliance, novel foods and nutraceuticals. These are areas where regulatory clarity can be particularly important for new businesses seeking to bring products to market while meeting food safety requirements. However, the cell will offer advisory guidance, not exemptions from existing rules or automatic approvals. Licensing, approval and enforcement decisions will remain with the competent authorities. Queries requiring legal interpretation will be vetted by FSSAI’s Legal Division. The authority said information shared for query resolution would be handled confidentially and anonymised for policy analysis. The cell will also provide a channel for start-ups to flag recurring regulatory challenges and seek information about FSSAI initiatives and guidance materials. For entrepreneurs, the initiative could offer a single point of contact for understanding applicable food safety requirements before products reach consumers. FSSAI has not specified in its post how start-ups can register for the weekly sessions or when the cell will become operational. You use AI every day. Now get your AI Quotient. Take the AIQ test.
