Summit Therapeutics (NASDAQ:SMMT) shares gained 1.1% in pre-market trading after Bernstein SocGen upgraded the biotechnology company to Market Perform from Underperform and raised its price target to $11.90 from $9.80.
The broker said Summit's current valuation now provides a more appropriate reflection of the risk-adjusted intrinsic value of ivonescimab, the company's only late-stage drug candidate. However, Bernstein stopped short of adopting a bullish position, arguing that the treatment is unlikely to emerge as a broad replacement for Keytruda across multiple tumour types.
Despite those reservations, the firm concluded that the recent reset in Summit's share price justified moving away from its previous negative recommendation.
Ivonescimab Trial Prospects Drive Revised Valuation
As part of its updated assessment, Bernstein assigned a 35% probability of technical success to the ILLUMINE Phase 3 trial.
The broker also incorporated additional risk-adjusted value into its valuation model to reflect the possibility that studies of ivonescimab in urothelial cancer or head and neck cancer could deliver positive results, although it continues to view those outcomes as relatively unlikely.
Summit shares have been trading close to the lower end of their 52-week range. The stock was recently just above its 52-week low of $12.07 and approximately 57% below its 52-week high of $30.05, leaving the company at a substantially reduced valuation compared with its previous peak.
Another important catalyst remains the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's ongoing review of Summit's biologics licence application for ivonescimab. The regulator has a target action date in November 2026, keeping the drug's regulatory prospects firmly in focus for investors.
Stronger U.S. Market Provides Supportive Backdrop
Broader market conditions were also favourable for risk assets. The S&P 500 gained 0.5%, the Dow Jones advanced 0.5% and the Nasdaq rose 0.9%.
The positive environment provided some additional support for clinical-stage biotechnology companies, although Summit continues to face significant competitive considerations within oncology and immuno-oncology.
Competition is intensifying among companies developing treatments in the PD-1/VEGF bispecific antibody market, a factor Bernstein highlighted as a structural concern for the longer-term commercial potential of ivonescimab.
Bernstein Upgrade Eases Pressure on Summit Shares
Bernstein SocGen's rating change provided the immediate catalyst for Tuesday's modest pre-market gain, offering some relief after a prolonged period of pressure on Summit Therapeutics shares.
