NEW DELHI: Consumption of petrol increased 7.9 percent year-on-year in Aug, while diesel registered a growth of 6.5 percent, according to provisional data released by Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) Tuesday.Petrol sales increased to 3.8 million tonnes (MT) from 3.5 MT in the same month last year, while diesel consumption rose to 7 MT from 6.6 MT, data showed. Petrol and diesel consumption had registered year-on-year growth of 9.7 percent and 10.7 percent, respectively, in July.Diesel is widely used by transport vehicles for passenger and freight movement, besides being used in the agricultural sector. Erratic monsoon conditions due to El Nino boosted demand for diesel for irrigation.LPG demand, however, fell 16.2 percent to 2.4 MT from 2.9 MT a year earlier, continuing a trend seen during the summer months. ATF consumption rose marginally by 1.4 percent to 7.2 lakh tonnes from 7.1 lakh tonnes.Cumulative petrol consumption during Apr-Aug in the current financial year increased 6.5 percent to 18.9 MT, while diesel consumption rose 4.3 percent to 40.6 MT.
