He Planned to Retire From Deere in October 2027. One Day Could Cost Him a $50,000 Retirement Bonus.
A longtime John Deere worker has his retirement date circled, his spouse on board, and his knees giving out. But one overlooked date buried in the benefit pl...
Deere's $50,000 retirement bonus deadline is September 30, 2027, which falls one month before the labor contract expires on October 31, costing eligible workers who miss it dearly.
Workers with 25-plus years of service qualify for a $50,000 bonus, while those with 10 to 24 years receive $37,500 under current plan language.
A $50,000 retirement bonus can bridge the income gap between a worker's last paycheck and Social Security, potentially allowing delay from age 62 to 70 for higher monthly benefits.
John Deere workers just rejected a proposed two-year contract extension, leaving their current labor agreement set to expire October 31, 2027. For a longtime worker already thinking about retirement, though, another date in Deere's benefit plan may be worth considerably more.
Picture a hypothetical machinist with more than 25 years at John Deere ( NYSE: DE ). His knees are done, his spouse is ready, and October 2027 feels like the natural exit. He would still be leaving before the current labor agreement expires. That could be one month too late.
Under Deere's current benefit plan, an eligible employee who retires between October 1, 2021 and September 30, 2027 receives a retirement bonus based on completed service. Ten to 24 years is worth $37,500. At 25 years or more, the amount rises to $50,000. Retire September 30 and the current language puts him inside that window. Retire October 1 and it does not.
That one-month gap is exactly why retirement dates deserve more scrutiny than they usually get. Deere's labor agreement runs through the end of October 2027, but the $50,000 retirement-bonus window closes a month earlier. A worker looking only at the contract expiration could reasonably think an October retirement still gets him out before bargaining starts again. The benefit plan is keeping a different calendar.

The bonus is also tied to retirement eligibility under the plan. Deere permits early retirement under several routes, including at age 60 with at least 10 years of service credit or with 30 or more years of service credit regardless of age. For someone already eligible and preparing to leave, September 30 is therefore more than another date in a 553-page benefit document. It can be a $50,000 line.
