Duffy: Carney will ‘come to the table’ because tariffs will be ‘devastating’

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Sunday that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is going to “come to the table” on trade because tariffs against the U.S.’s northern neighbor will be “devastating.”

“To think that they’re going to go to war with Donald Trump and actually win that war with the U.S., I think it’s foolish on their part,” Duffy said of Canada on “Fox News Sunday.” “And again, I think what the president is trying to do with [U.S. Trade Representative] Jamieson Greer, who, by the way, has done an amazing job representing the president and America, is we want fairness for the American worker. And some of our best friends are the worst offenders that treat us the worst.”

“And the fact that we provide their security for them and they take advantage of us, I think President Trump was the first one to go, ‘You know what? That’s not the kind of relationship that friends should have,’” he added.

Duffy also said that he believed that Carney would join discussions quickly because the potential tariffs will be “devastating for his country.”

On Sunday, Trump claimed that Canada desires the “benefits of being a state, without being one” amid trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa.

“Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!! They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!” the president said in an early morning Truth Social post.

On Saturday, Carney said that his country would implement retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. starting on Sep. 8, in response to the Trump administration’s new 50 percent tariffs.

During a press conference , Carney said that Canada would “match Washington’s new tariffs dollar for dollar in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.”
