A $10,000 deductible can make a health insurance plan a very different financial proposition when the worst-case scenario isn't a routine doctor's visit but a seven-figure medical emergency.
Billionaire Cost Plus Drugs co-founder Mark Cuban recently questioned whether people considering high-deductible health plans are fully protected when a major claim is denied.
"So I went down the rabbit hole of trying to determine what are the economics for someone, who is currently healthy, to go to a HDHP with a 10k plus deductible," Cuban said on X in October.

Warren Buffett once said, "If you don't find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die." Here's how you can earn passive income with just $100.
The question that sent him digging was simple.
"The question I asked is 'I don't trust insurance companies," he posted. "What happens if I have a million dollar emergency and they won't pay' All I can say is WTF."
A high-deductible health plan requires the patient to take on more of the initial medical costs before the insurer begins paying a larger share of covered expenses.
That can mean a healthy person faces thousands of dollars in expenses before insurance starts doing much of the heavy lifting.
But Cuban's concern wasn't simply about having a large deductible. He questioned what happens when an insurer denies a major claim altogether.
He said his research led him to independent review organizations, which can review certain disputed insurance decisions.
One company that surfaced was ExamWorks, which Cuban recognized from a previous case involving a patient he was trying to help.

Cuban questioned whether the review process creates a conflict when companies involved in insurance claim reviews also count major insurers among their customers.
"The biggest customers of the companies that are the final decision makers for insurance carrier denials, are the biggest insurance companies," Cuban wrote.
He also questioned how state insurance commissioners oversee the arrangement.
Cuban's conclusion was a warning for people considering these plans.
"If you are looking at a HDHP, BE CAREFUL. It might just be rigged against you," he wrote.
