Semtech Corp. (NASDAQ: SMTC ) introduced two additional transceivers, the LR2022 and LR2012, to its LoRa Plus lineup, which now grows its reach to a full array of IoT deployments. Both devices use the fourth-generation LoRa IP core, which is also used in Semtech's LR2021. This ensures their compatibility with LoRaWAN and LR-FHSS protocols, as well as OOK devices. The rollout broadens Semtech's market potential for its LoRa Plus family covering a diverse set of technical requirements and price levels. This includes everything from basic sensor utility to more sophisticated, edge AI hardware and satellite-linked tracking frameworks.
These new additions, combined with LR2021, expand the LoRa Plus stack to three chips, enabling Semtech to support broader IoT deployments. It spans cost-effective sub-GHz sensor nodes to multi-band non-terrestrial network (NTN) links used for satellite-based global trackers. Offering LR2021, LR2022, and LR2012 under a unified platform with shared IP core, Semtech makes development more convenient for users. This would allow partners to grow across different product lines while reusing a common software platform.
Credibility of these designs is backed by engagements with companies like Engelmann and Zenner, which has resulted in early proof points and would encourage more uptake among metering and utility clients. Management's commitment to this segment bolsters its position within a sizable ecosystem, estimated to include more than 500 million deployed LoRa devices. Featuring the lineup at global industry events across Shenzhen, Bengaluru, and Amsterdam adds further exposure, putting Semtech in a strong position to gain additional revenue as IoT and satellite-linked device rollouts keep increasing worldwide.
Competition within the space is currently intense, as satellite-IoT chip producers and low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) could lead to price competition. Such dynamics could accelerate rivals' multi-band offerings and reduce Semtech's competitive edge despite its large user base.
Other critical considerations around the recent launch include dependence on specific customers and the timing of these rollouts. Near-term adoption will partly depend on production ramps by early customers such as Engelmann and Zenner, as well as additional wins across the utility and metering markets. At the same time, other customers from utility and metering segments could possibly delay their production schedules amid budget or regulatory constraints.
