The J. M. Smucker Company (NYSE: SJM ) reported a stronger fiscal first quarter and raised its full-year outlook. Net sales increased 5% to $2.22 billion, while company-defined non-GAAP adjusted diluted earnings per share—which excludes amortization, derivative-timing effects, and certain special-project costs—rose 71% to $3.24.
Higher net pricing, primarily for coffee, contributed four percentage points of sales growth. Volume/mix added only one point. Adjusted diluted EPS also included an $0.84-per-share benefit from approximately $115 million of tariff refunds. Removing that quarter-specific contribution leaves adjusted diluted EPS of approximately $2.40, compared with $1.90 in the prior-year period.
Volume/mix improved across four of the five reportable segments of The J. M. Smucker Company (NYSE:SJM). U.S. Retail Coffee sales rose 13%, with pricing contributing ten percentage points and volume/mix adding two points, primarily through Dunkin' and Café Bustelo.
U.S. Retail Frozen Handheld and Spreads sales increased 3%. Volume/mix contributed one point as continued Uncrustables growth offset lower peanut butter and fruit-spread volumes. Pet Foods also recorded one point of volume/mix growth, driven by cat food.
Away From Home generated two points of volume/mix growth, primarily from Uncrustables and fruit spreads, partly offset by lower coffee volumes. The segment results show that volume improvement extended beyond one brand or channel, even if the consolidated contribution remained modest.
Free cash flow—defined by The J. M. Smucker Company (NYSE:SJM) as operating cash flow minus additions to property, plant and equipment—recovered to $337.3 million from negative $94.9 million. The improvement primarily reflected higher net income and lower working-capital funding requirements, while also benefiting from the approximately $115 million tariff-refund receipt.
The J. M. Smucker Company (NYSE:SJM) recorded $230.8 million of net cash outflows related to debt. Net interest expense declined by $17.9 million, primarily because debt outstanding was lower. Fiscal 2027 free-cash-flow guidance was raised to approximately $1.1 billion from $1.0 billion, providing additional capacity to reduce leverage following the Hostess acquisition.
Coffee remained the largest sales catalyst for The J. M. Smucker Company (NYSE:SJM), but most of its growth came from pricing rather than higher volumes. The volume gains elsewhere were also small and partly offset by weaker peanut butter, fruit spreads, and Away From Home coffee volumes.
