On September 3, Vaxcyte (NASDAQ: PCVX ) announced two new C-suite hires and moved up the date for its most important looming catalyst. The company said it now expects topline safety, tolerability and immunogenicity data from the VAX-31 adult Phase 3 OPUS-1 trial by the end of October, narrowing guidance that had previously pointed only to sometime in the fourth quarter. For a clinical-stage vaccine company with no approved product on the market, that single change is the headline. The two executives brought in alongside it suggest Vaxcyte believes it is close enough to a launch to need people who have done this before.
Luis Jodar, Ph.D. joins as Chief Medical Officer after 17 years at Pfizer, where he served as Chief Medical Officer for Vaccines and Infectious Diseases and helped lead the clinical development and medical affairs work behind Prevnar 13 and Prevnar 20, the pneumococcal vaccines that currently dominate the adult market VAX-31 is trying to enter. He also worked on Abrysvo, Comirnaty, and Paxlovid, and earlier in his career helped lead the Meningitis Vaccine Project at the World Health Organization, an effort that produced MenAfriVac and has since reached more than 400 million people across sub-Saharan Africa. He has authored roughly 200 publications and served as the industry representative on the FDA's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee. In plain terms, Vaxcyte just hired one of the people who built the products it is trying to beat.
David McAvoy, J.D., arrives as Chief Legal Officer from Teva Pharmaceutical, where he ran a 235-person legal, compliance, and government affairs organization as Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer. Before Teva, he served as General Counsel of Endocyte through its $2.1 billion acquisition by Novartis, a deal that led to the launch of Pluvicto, and spent 27 years at Eli Lilly in senior legal roles, including General Counsel, International and FDA Senior Counsel, work that touched the development and launch of Prozac and Cialis. Vaxcyte is preparing a Biologics License Application for VAX-31, and McAvoy has already walked other companies through that exact process. Meanwhile, the OPUS-1 trial alone dosed 4,049 participants in a head-to-head comparison against Prevnar 20 and Capvaxive, the two standard-of-care vaccines, part of a broader Phase 3 program that has dosed 6,191 adults in total, roughly 3,500 of them with VAX-31. As of June 30, 2026, Vaxcyte held about $2.5 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and investments, enough to fund a BLA submission without tapping the market for cash.
