FBI raided Swalwell’s home, seized devices as part of sexual assault probe

The FBI reportedly raided former Rep. Eric Swalwell’s (D-Calif.) home and confiscated his electronic devices over the weekend amid an ongoing probe , according to multiple outlets.

The FBI searched the former congressman’s home in Washington, D.C., Sunday after they seized devices from Swalwell in San Francisco on Saturday, per The New York Times. The probe concerns allegations of sexual assault, the newspaper reported.

The raid comes just days after news broke of Swalwell’s “physical relations” with Christine Fang, a suspected Chinese spy, as outlined in newly declassified documents released by the White House Government Transparency Task Force. The FBI had previously investigated Fang.

Allegations of sexual assault are ultimately what led Swalwell to suspend his campaign for California’s governorship and resign from his House seat in April. Swalwell has denied any wrongdoing.

Swalwell was accused of assaulting a Capitol Hill staffer — who was 17 years his junior — twice in the midst of his current marriage, as initially reported by the San Francisco Chronicle .

The former House Democrat is being investigated by the FBI, Manhattan district attorney’s office and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department over the allegations that surfaced this spring.

In the Chinese spy probe, as revealed in the documents released earlier this week, Swalwell said he met Fang in 2015 and had “physical relations” with her on a “handful of occasions but never dated her or had a romantic relationship.”

Federal investigators determined she ran a political intelligence gathering operation directed by China’s primary civilian spy agency between 2011 and 2015.

An independent journalistic probe revealed that her objective was to infiltrate U.S. political circles to gather unclassified but sensitive political intelligence, manipulate campaign financing, and cultivate relationships with up-and-coming politicians who had national potential, as reported by Axios .

FBI memos show that Fang facilitated an illicit scheme to route campaign donations through straw donors.

In at least two cases, she used American conduits to obscure the fact that the political contributions were secretly being funded by the Chinese government.

Federal investigators also uncovered evidence that Fang placed Chinese nationals and foreign interns inside Swalwell’s congressional office in exchange for campaign fundraising support.
