F1 Sao Paulo Grand Prix results: Lando Norris wins at rainy Interlagos despite shaky start; Mercedes claims constructors' title
Formula 1 concludes its second of three triple-headers of the 2026 season this weekend in Brazil with the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
Lando Norris won the Sao Paulo Grand Prix from pole position on Sunday in mixed conditions at a rainy Autódromo José Carlos Pace. The win was Norris’ second straight at Interlagos. Max Verstappen, despite starting 21st, came in a triumphant P2 after passing 10 cars on the first lap of the grand prix. Verstappen’s first-lap charge wasn’t the best of the race, though, as Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton cleared 11 cars, starting from P20. Both drivers were starting from the rear of the grid — along with Cadillac’s Sergio Pérez — due to engine replacements. Norris lost two positions in the first three corners of the race due to a slow start, as newly crowned champion Kimi Antonelli got him into Turn 1 and Liam Lawson followed out of the “Senna Esses.”After early day rain, the race started without precipitation but a damp track as the entire field started on intermediates. Following a switch to the soft tires, more rain fell and Antonelli spun going into Turn 1 on Lap 20, handing the lead back to Norris. He would not relinquish it. Additionally, Mercedes claimed its ninth constructors’ title, tying it with the iconic Williams team founded by namesake Frank Williams. Though they scored enough to secure the title, the points haul could have been even greater. George Russell finished P4, but if not for a spin coming out of the pit lane on the first stop for soft tires, could have been in contention for the win. Antonelli had three off-track excursions which led to a P5 finish.Sao Paulo Grand Prix resultsLando Norris, McLaren 1:35:23.504Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing +14.602Isack Hadjar, Red Bull Racing +24.485George Russell, Mercedes +33.991Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes +36.017Oscar Piastri, McLaren +56.475Charles Leclerc, Ferrari +73.586Liam Lawson, Racing Bulls +75.402Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari +1 lapNico Hülkenberg, Audi +1 lapArvid Lindblad, Racing Bulls +1 lapFernando Alonso, Aston Martin +1 lapFranco Colapinto, Alpine +1 lapPierre Gasly, Alpine +1 lapAlex Albon, Williams +1 lapGabriel Bortoleto, Audi +1 lapOliver Bearman, Haas +1 lapSergio Pérez, Cadillac +2 lapsCarlos Sainz, Williams +2 lapsRafael Câmara, Haas +2 lapsLance Stroll, Aston Martin DNF (30 laps)Valtteri Bottas, Cadillac DNSNorris claims poleLando Norris qualified on the pole at Autódromo José Carlos Pace for the third consecutive year during a rain-affected session. The drop for Russell will promote his Mercedes teammate and newly minted champion Kimi Antonelli to P2 to start the grand prix. In addition to Russell, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc takes a 10-place grid penalty for an internal combustion engine change, while Scuderia teammate Lewis Hamilton, Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Cadillac's Sergio Pérez will all start from the back with complete power unit changes.Sao Paulo Grand Prix starting gridLando Norris, McLarenKimi Antonelli, MercedesLiam Lawson, Racing BullsNico Hülkenberg, AudiIsack Hadjar, Red Bull RacingOliver Bearman, HaasGeorge Russell, Mercedes**Fernando Alonso, Aston MartinAlex Albon, WilliamsOscar Piastri, McLarenRafael Câmara, HaasArvid Lindblad, Racing BullsCarlos Sainz, WilliamsCharles Leclerc, Ferrari***Franco Colapinto, AlpinePierre Gasly, AlpineLance Stroll, Aston MartinValtteri Bottas, CadillacGabriel Bortoleto, AudiMax Verstappen, Red Bull Racing*Sergio Pérez, Cadillac*Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari**—Back-of-grid penalty**—5-place grid drop***—10-place grid dropHamilton, Leclerc, Verstappen, Russell and Pérez will take grid penaltiesThe results on the road of qualifying will not be predictive of the starting grid for Sunday's Sao Paulo Grand Prix.Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Mercedes' George Russell will all take power unit-related grid drops. Ferrari have exceeded their season allowance for the internal combustion engine, earning 10-place drops for Hamilton and Leclerc. However, Hamilton will start from the back of the grid after taking a separate penalty for a new power train. Hamilton experienced trouble in FP1 and FP3, leading to the equipment replacements.Verstappen and Cadillac's Sergio Pérez likewise will start from the back of the grid following a complete power unit change. Russell will lose five spots for taking his sixth internal combustion engine of the season. Rafael Câmara to make maiden F1 startBrazilian Rafael Câmara was already set to drive for Haas in 2027, but following Esteban Ocon's abrupt dismissal during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend, he will make his first F1 start in his home country.Câmara currently leads the Formula 2 standings, driving for Invicta, by seven points over Red Bull junior driver Nikola Tsolov. Prior to making the jump to F2, Camara won the Formula 3 championship in 2025 driving for Trident. At one point driving in regional Formula 4, Câmara was a teammate a Prema with newly minted F1 champion Kimi Antonelli.Ferrari drama persistsDespite being second in the constructors's standings, all is not harmonious in the Ferrari camp. The latest incident between teammates Hamilton and Leclerc came during the first lap in Mexico City as going into Turn 1, they held the top two spots. But two aggressive moves from Leclerc, first into Turn 1, then into Turn 4, set off a chain of events that handed Verstappen the lead and eventual race win. Hamilton lamented on the radio in the closing moments of the race that "serious" talks need to be had. Mexico City was just the latest in a series of incidents between the teammates that began at Zandvoort and continued at Monza, costing the team valuable results. "Well, I'll speak with Lewis," Leclerc said. "I could be also unhappy with how much he pushed me off the track out of Turn 1, but I think it's racing. When you are fighting for a win, it's the way it should be."Hamilton continued to fume this week: "When I was at Mercedes, I watched and witnessed the back and forth between Charles and Carlos [Sainz] several races, where they were battling so much that the person ahead just pulled away, and they had the pace to actually win."But it is one thing when that's happening in fourth and fifth, as opposed to first and second, and you lose the win. That's significant."The guy is 28 years old, so I don't think it's an age thing. I think it's a mentality thing."It's like, 'Do or die. Either I win or none of us do,' and it shouldn't be that. It should be us getting that one-two."Here's what else to know ahead of Sao Paulo Grand Prix and remember, you can stream all three practice sessions and qualifying right here on Yahoo Sports:Sao Paulo Grand Prix practice resultsFree practice 3Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing 1:11.622Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes +0.025Lando Norris, McLaren +0.131George Russell, Mercedes +0.184Charles Leclerc, Ferrari +0.274Oscar Piastri, McLaren +0.313Arvid Lindblad, Racing Bulls +0.438Liam Lawson, Racing Bulls +0.549Isack Hadjar, Red Bull Racing +0.591Gabriel Bortoleto, Audi +1.022Pierre Gasly, Alpine +1.022Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari +1.211Nico Hülkenberg, Audi +1.243Franco Colapinto, Alpine +1.303Rafael Câmara, Haas +1.359Oliver Bearman, Haas +1.487Alex Albon, Williams +1.525Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin +1.549Carlos Sainz, Williams +1.681Sergio Pérez, Cadillac +1.951Valtteri Bottas, Cadillac +2.100Lance Stroll, Aston Martin +3.144Free practice 2Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes 1:10.763Lando Norris, McLaren +0.253Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing +0.259George Russell, Mercedes +0.273Oscar Piastri, McLaren +0.321Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari +0.450Charles Leclerc, Ferrari +0.720Gabriel Bortoleto, Audi +1.017Isack Hadjar, Red Bull Racing +1.076Oliver Bearman, Haas +1.228Franco Colapinto, Alpine +1.233Arvid Lindblad, Racing Bulls +1.245Liam Lawson, Racing Bulls +1.279Pierre Gasly, Alpine +1.346Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin +1.775Rafael Câmara, Haas +1.798Carlos Sainz, Williams +1.979Lance Stroll, Aston Martin +2.179Alex Albon, Williams +2.190Sergio Pérez, Cadillac +2.553Valtteri Bottas, Cadillac +2.620Nico Hülkenberg, Audi (no time set)Free practice 1Lando Norris, McLaren 1:11.717Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes +0.082Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing +0.236Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari +0.324George Russell, Mercedes +0.386Isack Hadjar, Red Bull Racing +0.439Gabriele Minì, Alpine +0.852Gabriel Bortoleto, Audi +0.897Franco Colapinto, Alpine +0.937Liam Lawson, Racing Bulls +0.998Leonardo Fornaroli, McLaren +1.116Oliver Bearman, Haas +1.120Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin +1.300Arvid Lindblad, Racing Bulls +1.321Valtteri Bottas, Cadillac +1.654Alex Albon, Williams +1.794Luke Browning, Williams +1.874Rafael Câmara, Haas +1.979Lance Stroll, Aston Martin +2.043Colton Herta, Cadillac +2.558Dino Beganovic, Ferrari +2.640Freddie Slater, Audi +3.249Sao Paulo Grand Prix streaming scheduleAll times EasternFriday 10:10-11:30 a.m.: Free practice 1 (Yahoo Sports, Apple TV, F1 TV Pro) 1:40-3 p.m.: Free practice 2 (Yahoo Sports, Apple TV, F1 TV Pro)Saturday 9:10-10:30 a.m.: Free practice 3 (Yahoo Sports, Apple TV, F1 TV Pro) 12:25-2 p.m.: Qualifying (Yahoo Sports, Apple TV, F1 TV Pro)Sunday 10:50-11:55 a.m.: Pre-race show (Apple TV, F1 TV Pro) 11:55 a.m.-2 p.m.: Sao Paulo Grand Prix (Apple TV, F1 TV Pro)Kimi Antonelli enters the Sao Paulo Grand Prix as the newly crowned F1 world drivers' champion.Mark Sutton - Formula 1 via Getty ImagesSao Paulo Grand Prix detailsTrack: Autódromo José Carlos Pace (Interlagos) | 2.677-mile, 15-turn permanent racing facility in Sao Paulo Race length: 71 laps for 190 miles Lap record: 1:10.540 (Valtteri Bottas, 2018, Mercedes) Tire compounds: Hard (C3), Medium (C4), Soft (C5) 2025 winner: Lando Norris, McLaren-MercedesTop drivers and best bets for the Sao Paulo Grand PrixThree-time race winner Max Verstappen has the best moneyline entering the weekend at +125, followed by already crowned champion Kimi Antonelli at +225. Rain is likely for Friday morning, but figures to be out of the area by the time free practice sessions roll around. Saturday's forecast for qualifying is clear entering the weekend, but with temperatures in the mid-80s it will be 10+ degrees warmer, rendering data from Friday's practices less reliable. Sunday calls for more early rain that will be out of the area by race time, but temperatures will only be in the mid-60s, which should make for some fascinating strategy decisions in terms of which tire compound to start on and switch to.
