Everything Coming to Netflix in October
Florence Pugh in East of Eden, Ben Affleck's Animals, and a hefty dose of comedy docs... all on Netflix.
It's officially Spooky Season, and Netflix has...gone a bit light on the spookies.
Sure, there's some choice Mike Flanagan with Ouija: Origin of Evil and the excellent Hush — plus movies like The Sixth Sense, Crimson Peak, Red Dragon, 2013's Evil Dead, three Psychos (you can skip 3 but don't sleep on 2), and even The Menu — but mostly October is about comedy documentaries!
From Norm Macdonald to Matthew Perry to Martin Mull to SCTV, it's all about looking at the careers — and, in some cases, demons — of those who've made us howl with laughter over the years. It's quite the cache! On top of that, there's a new East of Eden adaptation, a Victorious sequel series, the fourth season of The Diplomat, all the Bourne movies, and a new Ben Affleck film that's supposed to be nuts.
So while you ponder the how/why/who of Netflix raising its prices once again, here's a rundown of every series, special, movie, and doc landing on Netflix in October...
If you're just looking for a detailed list of everything coming to Netflix this month, you can jump to the full release schedule by day.
Mother-flippin' Florence Pugh and future Professor X Christopher Abbott star in this retelling of one of John Steinbeck's best novels, East of Eden. The most famous adaptation before this was the James Dean version from 1955 that was directed by Elia Kazan; granddaughter Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks) developed and wrote this new version, which focuses on the ongoing drama between two families — the Trasks and the Hamiltons.
Those who only know Martin Mull from his acting gigs (Roseanne, Clue, Arrested Development) will delight in learning that he was a massively popular virtuoso stand-up comedian in the '70s. This superstar spotlight was started by the late Bob Saget and eventually completed by Neil Berkeley after Saget's passing in 2022.
Mother-flippin' Josh Hartnett squares off against a mysterious sea creature in the new series Below . As a cynical, stubborn fisherman, Hartnett's Calvin must fight to protect his family, his community, and his vanishing way of life. Station Eleven's Mackenzie Davis and Stranger Things' Charlie Heaton also star.
Ben Affleck directs, co-writes, and stars in the new crime thriller Animals , about a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose son gets kidnapped, forcing him and his wife (Kerry Washington) to go to extreme measures to get the ransom money. Steven Yeun, Gillian Anderson, and Ray Fisher co-star.
Victorious fans, rejoice! This spin-off/sequel focuses on Daniella Monet's Trina Vega (sister of Victoria Justice's Tori from the parent show) as her struggles to become an actress lead her back to Hollywood Arts, where she fills in as a substitute teacher. Plenty of past Victorious stars — except for Ariana Grande, naturally — will have guest spots, while Community's Yvette Nicole Brown returns as Principal Helen Dubois, a character that started over on Drake & Josh.
Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald - October 16
Directed by Judd Apatow, this closer look at the late Norm Macdonald is built from archival footage, personal photos, and rare home videos submitted by friends and fans. We're hoping there's a whole section about his epic 2008 performance at the Roast of Bob Saget. Look it up; it's worth the rabbit hole-ing.
Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story - October 23
Co-directed by Judd Apatow and Neil Berkeley, this exploration of reality-blurring comedian Maria Bamford is a must-watch that unpacks Bamford's mental health journey and her fearless comedy.
Also recommended is Bamford's groundbreaking two-season Netflix series, Lady Dynamite — a hilarious, surreal portrayal of her own attempts to rebuild her life after months of recovery for bipolar disorder.
The One About Matthew Perry - October 27
This three-part documentary series spotlights sitcom megastar Matthew Perry, including his tragic untimely death. Directed by Mary Robertson (Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV), The One About Matthew Perry features interviews with his close inner circle of friends as well as never-before-seen photos and videos from the Perry family's private collection.
SCTV: The Greatest Show You've Never Heard Of (doc) - October 30
With all six seasons of Canadian sketch comedy series SCTV now on Netflix, it's time for the uninitiated to find out all about this ensemble of comedy legends. Hailing from Toronto's Second City comedy troupe, SCTV was a late '70s/early '80s show that boasted the likes of Martin Short, Andrea Martin, Eugene Levy, John Candy, Catherine O'Hara, and Rick Moranis. Check out the full story of SCTV's influence on comedy and its lasting legacy, having launched a half-dozen or so comedy icons.
