One of the first side quests you will come across in Phantom Blade Zero is Flesh Lily. During the opening of the game, as you explore Weeping Creek Valley, you will stumble upon Yu’er. She is a young woman who has escaped Pangzhen, looking to find help for her father, who has become ill.
She divulges that Pangzhen has been overrun by Mandate forces and a sickness of some kind. To cure her father’s sickness, she is hunting for ingredients found in a medicinal recipe, specifically a flower called the Flesh Lily. Due to the danger ahead, Soul suggests that Yu’er wait here, and he will find the flower for her. This begins the Tale side quest: Flesh Lily.
Before you can progress the quest, you need to follow the main story path until you defeat the main boss: Peng Meng, The Axemaster, during the Against The Flow story quest. He is located just after the Outpost bell in Weeping Creek Valley.
He’s a large opponent with plenty of strong strikes, so prepare yourself. These are the special attacks you need to look out for in this fight:
The Axemaster is a slow-moving boss who hits extremely hard. Oftentimes, it’s safer to dodge than attempt a parry, but you’ll want at least a few successful parries to lower his Sha-Chi meter and cause a guard break.
The Axemaster has slow recovery animations after big hits, so stay patient and counterattack when he’s on the ground or regaining his balance. The Jagged Steel sword is great here because it inflicts Bleed and the boss is slow enough to give you generous combo openings.
Beating this fight will also unlock your first Phantom Edge, the Dread Axe.
After Peng Meng has been defeated, rest at the nearby bell in the arena and head back into the Outpost. Next to Forge, the blacksmith in the Outpost, you can find Yu’er.
Speak to her to gain a little bit more information about the Flesh Lily.
Continue on the main story path until you reach the Valley Sha-Chi Tower. At the base of the tower, you can find the bell “Valley Sha-Chi Tower 1st Floor”.
Activate it and save your game, as there is a tough fight ahead.
Walk into the tower and defeat the three shielded enemies in front of you. You can easily defeat them with any charged Phantom Edge attack, as it breaks their shields. Upon defeating them, you will also pick up the Sha-Chi Furnace Inspection Crank, which can be used to complete part of the A Severed Mindseal Tale.
Just to the right of the central column on this first floor, a ramp sits at the back of the room next to a pipe.
Slide down it and defeat the grunt enemies lingering out down here.
Follow the path of red flowers, around to the left to find Hua, Deadly Betrothed. This is one of the first side bosses in the game, and a tough fight this early on.
Hua is a tough fight with several deadly mechanics in her moveset that can be hard to manage at first. But learning how she fights, behaves, and how her poisonous flowers work will make the fight easier to tackle.
Beyond the three main mechanics of the fight, Hua is largely an endurance fight, asking you to parry sword attacks, and continuously maintain your parry timing to wear down her Sha-Chi meter. She will also constantly teleport around the arena after combos, in-between combos, and before starting her attacks towards you, requiring you to be constantly on the ball.
These are the key moves and mechanics you need to learn and watch out for:
You can slink in-between them as they spin, but be warned if you hit one, you will get stunned and fall to one knee, opening you up for a grab attack.
Parry these just as she swings her sword down to deal a lot of Sha-Chi damage and open Hua up for a combo.
She can also perform this attack on its own. It will deal remove about 60% of your health if you get caught by this attack.
With this fight, you want to learn the parry timings over dodging, unless dealing with the various flowers she spawns and landing one or two hits in-between combos and at the end of attack chains. We suggest using the Sanguine Reach weapon, due to its range and impressive combos as you won't always be right next to Hua due to the amount of moving around she does.
When her Sha-Chi meter has been depleted, this gives you a key opportunity to land a heavy attack combo. When her Sha-Chi meter is around half full, you can also use a fully charged Dread Axe Phantom Edge attack to deal a massive chunk of health damage.
Simply repeat this over and over by continuously stunning Hua until you outlive the amount of poisonous flower attacks she spawns and deplete her health. Chances are you will make it through this fight by the skin of your teeth.
Upon defeating her, you will get the Scarlet Wraithblade weapon, which allows you to spawn those same deadly flowers from your own attacks.
Sitting at the base of the altar where Hua was standing at the start of the fight are the Twin Flesh Lilies. Pick the item up.
Travel back to the Outpost to talk to Yu’er. Speak to her one final time and she will hand you back one of the Flesh Lilies, giving you the item: Flesh Lily (which will come in handy later)
