104-year-old Brewers fan makes second accurate score prediction
Ruth Werning, 104, has now accurately predicted the winning Brewers' score not once, but twice, in the post-season.
Charlotte Werning Kolby thinks she should be placing bets.
Her 104-year-old mother Ruth Werning has now accurately predicted the Milwaukee Brewers' winning score not once, but twice, on their post-season journey.
First, Werning told a WISN-TV reporter the Brewers would win 6-2 in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers Oct. 14.
Days later, Werning told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel her World Series Game 1 prediction: Brewers would beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 3-2.
For a few seconds of Friday night's chaotic ninth inning , some of the Brewers players, an umpire, a broadcaster, thousands of fans and, apparently, whoever controls American Family Field's post-game fireworks, would have said Werning's Game 1 prediction was off.
They all thought shortstop Cooper Pratt caught the ball with his foot still on second base before turning a double-play to secure a 3-1 win and take a 1-0 series lead.
But Werning was right after all, even if it caused the 43,250 fans in attendance and Brewers Nation a few more tense minutes. But after a challenge on the play from Rays manager Kevin Cash, a replay showed Pratt's foot came off second base.
Then Brewers pitcher Trevor Megill struck out Jonny DeLuca to actually close out the game, and the Brewers won 3-2, just as Werning predicted.
"I wish I were a betting person," daughter Werning Kolby said the morning after World Series Game 1.
Her mom didn't get her Game 4 NLCS prediction right, but still, these two correct predictions are "more than kind of crazy," Werning Kolby said.
Ruth Werning didn't stay up to watch the end of Game 1. Werning woke up "on cloud nine" about her Milwaukee Brewers winning, according to her daughter, who checked in with her mom on the phone during breakfast. The pair are still game to attend a Brewers World Series game in person, if the opportunity presents itself.
Werning doesn't make predictions like this often, her daughter said. But she does have a strong intuition.
"She's got a hotline to God, I'll tell you that," Werning Kolby the morning of Oct. 24.
So, what does Werning guess will happen in Game 2 of the World Series?
Werning Kolby relayed her mom's prediction over the phone.
"They will win, and the score will be 3-1 Brewers," Werning Kolby said.
She said her mom sounded quite confident.
