Brewers seek first World Series sweep since Giants swept Tigers in 2012
There have been 19 sweeps in the World Series, plus two more in 1907 and 1922 that finished 4-0 with a tie game. The Brewers could get the 20th sweep tonight...
The Milwaukee Brewers will have the chance to do something that hasn't been done in 14 years when they take the field for Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
With a 3-0 series lead over the Tampa Bay Rays after a 10-1 win in Game 3 , the Brewers could become the first team to sweep a World Series opponent since 2012, when the San Francisco Giants swept the Detroit Tigers . That year, the Brewers finished third in the National League Central and missed the playoffs.
There have been 19 sweeps in the World Series, plus two more in 1907 and 1922 that ended 4-0 with a tie game, according to Baseball Almanac. Of those 21 series, the New York Yankees were involved in 11 – eight as the winning team and three as the losing team.
If the Brewers complete the sweep of the Rays, it would end a 14-year World Series sweep drought, the longest in series history. The next-longest gap is 13 years, from 1976 to 1989.
No team has ever lost a World Series after taking a 3-0 lead and only four teams have won Game 4 after falling behind 3-0: the 1910 Chicago Cubs, 1937 New York Giants, 1970 Cincinnati Reds and 2024 New York Yankees. In each case, the team that had been leading, 3-0, went on to win Game 5.
