How to Navigate Rebecca Yarros' Popular Fourth Wing Book Series

· 628 words· updated September 4, 2026 at 03:49 PM

Rebecca Yarros has been writing romance novels for more than a decade now , but it's her popular romantasy series that has truly caught fire. Fourth Wing, the first book in the Empyrean series, is a spicy story about a dragon academy and magic. Thanks to a massive surge in fans, the series has quickly become one of the most popular new stories in recent memory. There's even an Amazon TV series in the works for it already and multiple board game adaptations.

If you're new to the Empyrean series or romantasy in general, starting with Fourth Wing is an excellent choice. Rebecca Yarros is also coming out with a companion book this year called Threshing Day , which takes place across different points in the book timeline.

There are a ton of different ways to enjoy books these days, and the Empyrean series is available in pretty much every format. If you don't care about reading physical books, I'd suggest checking out the Kindle versions first. The Fourth Wing books absolutely dominated the Kindle charts last year with the release of Onyx Storm, and reading digitally is by far the most convenient way to enjoy the story. That being said, the paperback and hardcover editions are similarly priced.

If you prefer to listen to audiobooks, the original version narrated by Rebecca Soler has received rather mixed reviews online. For the best possible experience, you'll want to check out the dramatized adaptations of the first book. These feature a full cast and offer a much richer experience.

Fourth Wing, The Graphic Novel: Volume One (The Empyrean Series)

The Fourth Wing series is getting its first graphic novel next year, which was recently announced with a release date of April 6, 2027. The cover art has yet to be revealed, but the listing states that it will be 256 pages long and adapts chapters 1-22 of the first book. Yarros has also mentioned that she's already written the second graphic novel , so the next volume is in the works.

Where Does Threshing Day Fit on the Empyrean Timeline?

Threshing Day (Wing and Claw Collection) (The Empyrean)

Rebecca Yarros is releasing a new novel in the series this month, but this one is a bit different. Threshing Day is a collection of short stories about various characters' Threshing Day. While we get a look at Violet Sorrengail's Threshing Day via Fourth Wing, this new book is about seeing some other key perspectives on the day they bonded with their dragons.

As for where these stories actually fit on the timeline, it depends on which characters are featured. We've gotten confirmation that Xaden's story is included in the collection, which took place a couple of years before Violet joined Basgiath War College. If other older characters like Brennan and Mira are also featured, the book will be jumping to various points in the past.

Rebecca Yarros has been fairly busy working on projects that aren't the fourth book in the Empyren series. Because of that, we still don't have any concrete details about when we should expect the next novel to be announced. Based on her previous releases and writing schedules, fans have speculated that we could get a new novel as early as 2027. Without any official announcements from Yarros herself, it's impossible to pin down when to expect the next direct sequel.
