Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever had championship aspirations heading into the 2026 season. Unfortunately, those championship dreams ended in the first round of the postseason as their superstar struggled when it mattered most.
On Thursday night, the Fever faced the Aces in a pivotal Game 3 showdown with the series tied 1-1. However, the Fever saw their season come to an end, falling 94-83 as Clark was not at her best in the pivotal game.
Given Clark's importance to the Fever, the team tends to go as she goes. When she is dominant, Indiana is dominant. When she struggles, however, it's often difficult for the team to overcome.
Unfortunately for both Clark and the Fever, she was not at her best this postseason, particularly in the Game 3 loss.
Clark finished Thursday night's game just 6-for-17 from the field and just 3-for-11 from three-point range. She also had six turnovers in the game with just four assists.
Clark's struggles were especially apparent in the fourth quarter. With the game on the line in the game's final period, Clark managed just two points, going 1-of-4 from the field with zero assists.
This was not the first time that Clark has struggled in the biggest games of the season. During the team's Game 1 loss to the Aces, Clark shot just 6-for-17 from the field and turned the ball over six times, though she also had 10 assists in the game.
It was a tall task to take on the league MVP and the defending WNBA champions in a series where Vegas had home court advantage. However, the Fever had a chance to secure home-court advantage and avoid this situation entirely, and Clark fell flat.
During the team's regular season finale against the Minnesota Lynx, the Fever had a chance to secure home-court advantage and earn a more favorable first-round matchup other than the Aces. It was a vitally important game, but unfortunately, Clark had the worst performance of her entire career, finishing with just two points in the game, going just 1-for-12 from the floor and with just three assists. The Fever star posted career lows in points (2), three-pointers (0), and field goal percentage (8.3%).
It's worth noting that Clark had a strong showing in Game 2 against the Aces, going 9-for-18 from the field with 27 points, 15 assists, and seven rebounds, going 5-for-11 from three-point range, but that performance was sandwiched between the two disappointing showings that led to Indiana's elimination.
Needless to say, it's been a rough stretch for Clark in some very pivotal games.
