The Australian Classification Board has rated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 , suggesting a port of Infinity Ward's original 2009 shooter may soon be revealed.

The ACB updated its website to reflect a fresh R 18+ rating for the fan-favorite entry in the Activision franchise, with a classification date of October 1, 2026, as spotted by Insider Gaming . Reflecting a mature description based on instances of "high-impact drug use, in-game purchases, online interactivity and chat," the sudden appearance of a rating suggests Microsoft may have plans to revisit Modern Warfare 2 in the near future.

The page, which is still live at the time of this piece's publication, specifically calls the title "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)." As many others have already pointed out, the obvious assumption is that this is our first hint that a proper port will soon be revealed. Which platforms it may appear on was not shared, but fans may want to stay on their toes for an announcement.

There is one major reason to suspect Modern Warfare 2 (2009) may soon return: Activision tried the same strategy with the Black Ops series earlier this year. Ports for Black Ops 1 and 2 were leaked , announced , and launched all within the span of about one month back in June – and seemingly to much success. Black Ops 2, specifically, reportedly emerged as one of the best-selling games of the year in the month after its launch, but Activision's decision to replay its hits didn't arrive without controversy.

Many criticized the Call of Duty ports as "low effort," calling out both Black Ops games for being little more than direct rips of the original 2010s releases with few, if any, upgrades. There was also the issue of exploiters, as multiplayer lobbies quickly populated with players more interested in taking advantage of the level-up system than actually playing the game . Activision eventually looked into the issue .

While tech and gameplay problems soured an otherwise exciting moment for Call of Duty fans, both ports' prices didn't do the release any favors either. Each game cost $40 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. DLC was also sold separately, with fans of the add-on content asked to spend $29.99 for each season pass if they didn't want to purchase any content individually. Discounts for PlayStation Plus subscribers helped soften the blow, but players will probably be on the lookout for similar issues should a Modern Warfare 2 port pop up.

Microsoft and Activision brought both Black Ops 1 and 2 ports exclusively to PlayStation consoles in July. Which platforms Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) may launch for, or if ports for other early entries in the Modern Warfare series will show up, remains to be seen. We'll have to wait for Activision to confirm the news to learn more.

IGN gave Infinity Ward's 2009 Call of Duty game a 9.5/10 review upon its release.
