Witcher Creator Says He’s Open to Unconventional Suggestions for Future Adaptations

From musicals to whatever comes next, The Witcher creator, Andrzej Sapkowski, isn't ruling out even more unconventional ways of bringing the fantasy series to life.

The Witcher has already been adapted into just about every major format you could think of, from the immensely popular video games and Netflix's live-action series to animated films and comics.

But during our recent wide-ranging interview with Sapkowski and his English translator, David French , we asked the author whether there are more experimental formats he'd like to see The Witcher explore, such as the possibility of a major stage production like Game of Thrones .

"Does a musical count as a stage play?" he asked. "If so, there were already two. What else? I am open to suggestions. Even unconventional ones."

Yes, Geralt of Rivia has, in fact, already ventured into musical territory , although Sapkowski seemingly doesn't want to put a limit on what could come next either. After all, the franchise has spent years expanding far beyond the books that first introduced Geralt.

Plus, there's certainly no shortage of Witcher projects on the horizon, either. CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Remastered is due to arrive on September 29, while the surprise new expansion Songs of the Past is planned for 2027. The Witcher 4, meanwhile, is currently targeting a 2028 release and will put Ciri in the starring role.

The publishing side of the franchise is also expanding further, with full-cast audio drama adaptations of Sapkowski's books arriving through 2026 and 2027, beginning with Crossroads of Ravens before moving on to The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny.

Netflix's live-action The Witcher is also heading into its fifth and final season, now expected in 2027 after a supposed delay .

Of course, Sapkowski himself isn't slowing down either. The author has confirmed that he is already writing his next Witcher novel, with a targeted completion date of 2027.

He has also told IGN that he is also considering eventually returning to the short-story format that originally introduced many readers to Geralt, while suggesting there is still plenty of room to explore the Witcher's earlier years.

Whether that next novel ultimately brings us another glimpse of young Geralt remains to be seen, but Sapkowski's response when we asked whether there was more room to explore that period of his life was short but sweet: "Room? Sky is the limit."
