The Legend of Zelda Live-Action Movie Will Be an Original Story Based on the Series So Far

Nintendo has discussed further details of its live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, including its title and story.

Revealed during today's The Legend of Zelda-dedicated Nintendo Direct by Shigeru Miyamoto, we learned that (unsurprisingly) the film's title will be: The Legend of Zelda. Why isn't there a subtitle? Miyamoto said that when we watch the movie, we'll find out.

As for the film's story, Miyamoto said that it would be based on stories and concepts from the franchise so far. In other words, don't expect this to be a direct adaptation of a particular game. Otherwise, details on the movie remain thin on the ground (and sadly, there's no sign of Tingle just yet).

"The title is... The Legend of Zelda," Miyamoto said. "Once you see the film, you'll understand why there isn't a subtitle. This is an original film based on the many stories, ideas and concepts of the series, built up through the games for 40 years. Through the creative power and visual expertise of the talented production team, it's become an artistic work worthy of the Legend of Zelda series. Both the development team at Nintendo and I are also involved, of course!

"When we talk about The Legend of Zelda, there's the Triforce," Miyamoto went on to tease. "What role do you think it'll play in the film? We'll share more details at a later time, so please look forward to it."

Originally announced in 2023, The Legend of Zelda is helmed by Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball, while Nintendo's legendary Shigeru Miyamoto is listed as a co-producer, alongside Marvel production veteran Avi Arad. The movie was shot last winter in New Zealand, with the Middle-earth-like location now doubling for Hyrule.

The Legend of Zelda is currently set to arrive on April 30, 2027.
