Tomb Raider Series Broke UK Crew Safety Laws, Report Confirms, Months After Star Sophie Turner Injured in Separate Incident

Amazon MGM Studios' new Tomb Raider series broke UK health and safety laws during production, it's emerged, just months after filming had to be halted due to star Sophie Turner sustaining an injury on set.

In a separate incident, the production was found to have failed its "biological monitoring" duties regarding the use of potentially hazardous chemicals — isocyanate paints, which can cause asthma attacks.

Isocyanate paints require appropriate equipment to be worn during use and must be handled by properly protected staff, with the air then given up to 20 minutes to clear afterwards. Deadline reports that this was not adhered to on the Tomb Raider set, and the UK's Heath and Safety Executive (HSE) was forced to intervene.

The production was later confirmed to have broken the Health and Safety At Work Act 1974 and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002. Despite the UK's non-stop use as a filming destination, just four HSE interventions have taken place over the past four years, making this a noteworthy occurrence — particularly for such a high-profile series.

Earlier this year, an on-set injury forced the entire production to be suspended for two weeks while Turner underwent treatment . The former Game of Thrones star is understood to have suffered a back injury, though healed sooner than some had feared. Meanwhile, the show's crew was reportedly paid for the time spent on hiatus.

Filming for Turner's Tomb Raider series initially began in January , with a starry cast that includes British acting legend Celia Imrie, Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs, as well as Alien and Avatar icon Sigourney Weaver. One unannounced cast member has also been spotted filming — former Lara Croft voice actress Keeley Hawes, who many fans suspect will play Lara's mother Amelia, in a neat passing of the torch from the video game series.

Tomb Raider is set to be released on Prime Video, though currently lacks a release date.
