Clash Royale: The Grand Arena Board Game Exclusive Trailer and Kickstarter Reveal

Maestro Media recently announced a new board game adaptation of the popular mobile game Clash Royale . Now, IGN can exclusively reveal that Maestro Media will be launching a Kickstarter campaign in support of the final product: Clash Royale: The Grand Arena this month

The Kickstarter, which is aiming to launch on October 20, follows the successful crowdfunding of Maestro’s previous collaboration with Supercell, Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid . Ahead of the campaign, we got the chance to speak with the board game’s lead designer, David Gordon, about how the team approached bringing the mobile hit to the tabletop.

First, we learned a little more about what to expect from the board game itself, which you can get the gist of in this exclusive trailer:

The Grand Arena generally adapts the deck-building and strategy elements of the mobile app into a board game. Yep, that means fans will finally be able to build Clash Royale decks with real cardboard.

The tabletop game is designed for two to four players. Each player controls their own forces, which consist of eight-card decks built around a chosen Champion. Cards will be based on the mobile game’s card list, plenty of which feature characters and items going back to the original Clash of Clans era.

In-game, players take turns to try and destroy other players’ Towers while also protecting their own. The board features two lanes, and players must determine where exactly to play cards to launch attacks, plant defensive units, and use items. Players can’t endlessly cycle through their cards, either, as moves are limited by the classic Clash resource, Elixir.

Destroying another player’s Tower nets you a Crown, and the player with the most Crowns at the end wins.

Sound familiar? It should - at least to Clash Royale fans. Maestro Media put some serious thought into translating the mobile gameplay to the tabletop.

We asked the game’s lead designer, David Gordon, about how the team approached the game’s design, and learned the process took some trial and error: “We tried mechanisms such as actual real time play against a clock, putting out a bunch of cubes, and simultaneous reveals, as well as various strategies to minimize the admin for players. Ultimately, we found that focusing on elixir spending in a turn-based card play system yielded a fun experience that most resembled that of the video game.”

That said, the team behind The Grand Arena was weary of designing a game that would only appeal to die-hard Clash fans. Over the course of the game’s development, they play-tested The Grand Arena with both Clash veterans and people who had no experience with the Supercell franchise. In Gordon’s words, “It was important that a strategy game fan who had never played the video game would find the tabletop version fun - and hopefully even inspire them to try the video game!”

The Grand Arena will be joining Maestro Media's previous release, Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid, which was successfully supported on Kickstarter in 2025 and is now available from retailers like Amazon and Target .
