Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G review: Stylish looks, capable performance

Rating: 3.5/5Smartphones today are expected to do much more than handle calls and messages. We use them to work, watch videos, play games, take photographs and navigate unfamiliar places, often for hours at a stretch. As brands add AI tools and decorative design elements, the basics still matter: a display that stays visible outdoors, dependable battery life, comfortable handling, and software that doesn't get in the way.The Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G promises to balance these everyday requirements with gaming-focused hardware and a distinctive design. Priced at Rs 49,999, the smartphone features a MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Ultimate 5G processor, a dedicated P1 graphics chip, a 6.78-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and a 6,500mAh battery. It also comes with a 50MP primary camera with optical image stabilisation, a 13MP front camera, and a rear notification system called Alive Matrix. We tested the Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G in the Tundra Green colour option, with the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage variant. After spending time with the phone, here’s what we think about the Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G:DesignThe phone's design stands out from the usual glass-and-metal slabs in this segment. The rear panel has a textured finish around the edges, angular patterns across the back and a prominent camera module that follows the brand’s signature triangular design language. The green finish looks good in hand, and the overall build gives the phone a premium feel. The camera module also houses the Alive Matrix Display, a dot-matrix panel that can show visual effects and information. Tecno presents it as more than a decorative element, with features such as notifications, battery status, timers and caller identification. However, in our experience, it felt more like a design gimmick than a feature we'd use regularly. The battery also drains faster when it's kept enabled.Despite its distinctive rear design, the Pova 8 Pro 5G remains comfortable to hold. Its proportions make it manageable for one-handed use, and the textured back adds to its visual appeal. All physical buttons, including the power button, volume rockers and Action button, are located on the right side. We could customise the Action button to perform different functions, such as triggering the camera shutter or turning on the flashlight.DisplayThe display is one of the phone's stronger aspects. The Pova 8 Pro 5G features a 6.78-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz. In everyday use, scrolling feels smooth, whether we are moving through social media feeds, browsing websites, or switching between apps.Outdoor visibility is another positive. We could see almost everything on the screen even under direct sunlight, making it easier to read messages, check navigation, and use apps outdoors without constantly searching for shade. This is particularly useful when traveling or using the phone during the day.The AMOLED panel also makes watching movies and series a pleasant experience. While watching titles such as The Dark Knight, Avengers: Endgame, and Game of Thrones, the display's contrast helped darker scenes retain their depth, while the colours added to the visual appeal of action sequences and detailed environments. The 1.5K resolution also made the content look sharp, and the large screen offered an immersive viewing experience. The high refresh rate is more noticeable while navigating the interface and gaming than when watching most films and series, which are typically presented at lower frame rates.Tecno claims peak brightness of up to 4,500 nits and high brightness mode of up to 1,600 nits. These are different brightness measurements, and actual visibility depends on the content displayed, ambient light and operating conditions. Our experience in direct sunlight was positive, but we would not treat the advertised peak figure as a brightness level sustained across the entire display. The phone also supports high-frequency PWM dimming to reduce visible flicker at lower brightness levels. Overall, the display is a strong point, combining smooth scrolling with good outdoor visibility.Performance and softwareThe Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G runs on the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Ultimate chipset, paired with a dedicated P1 graphics chip. Tecno has also included a 5,000mm² vapour chamber cooling system to manage heat during demanding tasks. In our experience, the phone offered capable gaming performance. We played high-graphics titles like BGMI and Real Cricket, along with a few casual games. We didn’t notice any lag or stutter while playing any of the titles. However, the phone got slightly warm during extended gaming sessions. It also warmed slightly in direct sunlight or while charging at full power. The heating was noticeable but didn't affect the device's overall usability. The software experience is overall smooth. The phone runs HiOS 16, which offers several customization options and productivity tools. We also came across a few minor UI bugs during regular use. However, they weren't significant enough to affect every interaction, and many users may not notice them in everyday use. Still, there is room to improve the software polish. The AI features were also helpful. Tools such as Ask Ella, AI Writing and AI Mind Hub are designed to assist with tasks including summarising web pages, generating text, and solving problems. All the tools did a decent job in our testing.CameraThe Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G features a 50MP Sony LYTIA 700C primary camera with optical image stabilisation, an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 13MP front camera. The primary sensor is designed to capture detailed images, while optical stabilisation helps reduce blur caused by movement. In our experience, the rear camera delivered decent results. It suits everyday photography and capturing memories for social media. Tecno also offers AI-powered editing tools for tasks such as removing reflections, shadows and lens flare, along with features like AI Auto Zoom and FlashSnap. AI processing helped in some situations, and the results were mostly consistent. Here are some camera samples:The 13MP front camera also offered a decent experience. The selfies were beautiful and looked social media-ready.Battery and chargingBattery life is one of the Pova 8 Pro 5G's more dependable aspects. The phone packs a 6,500mAh battery, and in our regular usage, it comfortably lasted around a day and a half. This included everyday activities such as browsing, messaging, watching videos and using apps. That kind of endurance reduces the need to look for a charger every evening.Charging is another area where the phone performs reasonably well. Tecno advertises 45W charging, and we found the phone could charge fully in about an hour at full-power settings. This makes topping up the large battery more convenient than the capacity alone might suggest. The phone supports three charging speeds. However, it gets slightly warm when charging at the highest speed.Connectivity and audioConnectivity on the Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G was good enough for everyday use. We didn't find any major issues with the basic connectivity experience, and the phone meets the usual requirements of a modern 5G smartphone. The device also includes stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. The audio quality is adequate for watching videos, following dialogue, and playing games, and it stands out as a defining feature. The large display and speakers make the phone well-suited for casual video consumption.VerdictThe Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G gets most of the fundamentals right. Its display is smooth and remains visible in direct sunlight, the phone feels premium and comfortable to hold, and the 6,500mAh battery delivers around a day and a half of normal use. Gaming performance is decent, and the 45W charging system can refill the battery in an hourThe cameras and the AI features are decent. The rear Alive Matrix lighting system is visually distinctive and offers some practical value, and HiOS 16 feels smooth and polished.Starting at Rs 49,999, the Pova 8 Pro 5G is a solid option for buyers who want a good display, smooth performance, and dependable battery life. You use AI every day.
