Recently-cut Panthers WR reportedly signing with new team
WR Jimmy Horn Jr., who was waived by the Panthers on Tuesday, is reportedly expected to sign with the Browns.
The story between the Carolina Panthers and wideout Jimmy Horn Jr. seems to be over.
According to league insider Jordan Schultz, the Cleveland Browns are expected to sign Horn. The second-year receiver was waived byt the Panthers on Tuesday to make room on their active roster for veteran inside linebacker Tyrel Dodson .
Horn's departure came after the season-opening loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday, where he muffed his very first punt return on the afternoon. But according to head coach Dave Canales, it was the numbers game that caught up to Horn.
"Yeah, the roster spot drove it," Canales told reporters on Wednesday. "But certainly for Jimmy, and we had a great conversation—he and I and Dan [Morgan] talked about it. Wanted to make sure he understood that we see the progress that he's making, we see the strides."
Canales added that he and the team had hoped to get Horn back in the building.
"We want him to come back. We want him to be here on the practice squad, because he brings a lot to what we can do.
"And this isn't the end of that story. This is just a part of it. And right now, we have to make the best decisions, I have to those hard decisions along with Dan to make sure we get guys out there that we feel confident with."
Going into Week 2, the Panthers may feel confident in fellow pass catcher John Metchie III — who has been elevated as the primary kick and punt returner on the depth chart in place of Horn.
The Panthers will face the Browns in Week 3.
